Julian Maury, Alexandre Bustillo‘s Leatherface (2018) movie trailer stars Stephen Dorff, Vanessa Grasse, Sam Strike, Nicole Andrews, and Lili Taylor. Leatherface‘s plot synopsis: “In Texas, years before the events of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, in the early days of the infamous Sawyer family, the youngest child is sentenced to a mental hospital after a suspicious incident leaves the sheriffs’ daughter dead. Ten years later, he kidnaps a young nurse and escapes with 3 other inmates. Pursued by authorities including the deranged sheriff out to avenge his daughter’s death, the young Sawyer teen goes on a violent road trip from hell, molding him into the monster known now as Leatherface.”

When I heard about an origin story for Leatherface and that it would be an origin story for Thomas Sawyer  a.k.a. Leatherface.  Showing how he was bullied in school because of his growing deformity, etc. like the one-shot comic book by Wildstorm called About a Boy.

That does not seem to be what this film will be doing. Instead, from the plot synopsis, Thomas will never be innocent, will never be sympathetic. The viewer won’t get to see how trauma created him.

On top of that, parts of this film seems idiotic. Here is an example: Thomas blows out the candles on his birthday cake and then his mother places a gigantic chainsaw on the table next to it. What? Really? I am not kidding. That is in this trailer.

Leatherface‘s script writer Seth M. Sherwood. didn’t seem to be concerned with crafting a good, logical narrative. Instead, he seemed to be eager to pile on nonsense, horror cliches, callbacks to previous Texas Chainsaw Massacre films, and part of Rob Zombie‘s Halloween storyline e.g. the antagonist violently escaping from a mental institute.

Leatherface also stars James Bloor, Sam Coleman, Sam Strike, Vanessa Grasse, Julian Kostov, Boris Kabakchiev, Ian Fisher, Velizar Binev, Dejan Angelov, and Nathan Cooper.
